I am still relativley a new Ford owner of a 2001 F250SD Crew with the V10. I would like to do my own oil change but it's been a while since I've had to crawl under an engine. I am going to refer to the recommendations in the owners manual as to the oil I buy and how much.
Any other advice as to oil brand/filter and other tips is greatly appreicated.
~Do not drink the oil.
~Have something to "catch" or direct the oil into the container as it comes out. After it slows a bit it will drain right onto your sway bar (if equipped). Makes for a nice clean bar though...

Believe it or not, the Delco filters get very good ratings, even
for Ford applications. The Frams often rank quite low though you
see tham at all the parts stores.
For 5w20 you do not have a lot of choices. I like the Motorcraft 5w20
semi-synthetic
Motorcraft 5W-20 Synthetic Blend is available at WalMart for $1.77 a quart. Stay away from Fram oil filters, use Motorcraft FL-820S, also available at WalMart at a great price. A neat item to have is the Fram Sure Drain valve, again available at WalMart. It makes for neat oil changes and only costs about $12.00. Hope you have a WalMart near you.
I was going to suggest that Fram drain valve kit but saw that it got recalled for some of the Ford engines. The PSD in particular. (I know, it's not really a Ford engine)
That made me shy away from it altogether. That, and the fact that you lose the magnet on the end of the drain plug.
So then I researched filter magnets...as soon as my 2nd mortgage goes through I'm getting one. (read: they cost more that I think they are worth...)
You could duct tape a strong magnet to the filter - it will do the
same thing. Not too much iron in and aluminum engine but certainly
enough to be worth catching any particles you can!
Really - Iron block with aluminum heads? Ugh! I need to buy that helms manual. I figured they had gone to an aluminum block to
keep the weight down given how long it is.
It hasn't been mentioned yet,but you may want to buy 7qts.of oil. Most people use 6.5qts.to bring the oil level up to the full mark after an oil and filter change.
Monsta,
Tell me about the recall info you have on the Fram Sure Drain valve. I have not heard of any problems, and haven't had any problems with mine, but I don't want to be surprized. I hate surprizes! I really like that valve, it sure makes for a neat oil change, and I change oil and filter every 3K, so I was not concerned with the loss of the magnet on the end of the stock drain plug. Motorcraft 5W-20 Synthetic Blend is my flavor, along with motorcraft filters. Thanks in advance for your reply!!!
For a magnet, it really is as easy as buying a strong one. To get
on as strong or better than the drain plug, just check out how
hard it pulls on a screwdriver or wrench. If the new one pulls harder,
it will work better.
Then just duct take it to the new, non-oily filter.
Remove the filter before you remove the magnet.
It will trap a lot of iron particles in the filter.
Go to your local Wal-Mart with a Lube Express in it and ask for the actual recall info. I don't want to quote incorrectly or give erroneous info due to me trying to recall it from my memory.

Jim,
Where would one buy a magnet? Would like a business card size (& type) magnet do the trick?
