Replace rear shocks

I need to replace my rear shocks. Theres now way to get them off with a ratchet. Do you need to take off the bed or cut off the stud. If you do with out taking off the bed how do you get them back on.

First what type is the Ford Truck you are thinking of replacing the shocks?

Second, there are a few dozen or so posts on shock changing on this site.

Third many Fords have an access hole in the side of the frame inside the rear tires to reach the top of the shocks, but be advised it is tight and too often the shock turns and you will end up cutting off the nut to release the top of the shock. Installing new shocks is not the problem if the access hole is there.

Check the site for the Shock posts as they give some good advise.

Yeah, I took mine off with a ratchet, no holes to drill, just a 1/2" drive ratchet with an 18mm socket And a 18mm wrench I believe to hold the stud from under the mount.

The easiest way to take them off is to use an 18mm wrench on the top nut then cut the plastic boot off the old shock and grab the shock rod with a pair of vise grips and turn the rod.

The easiest I have found is just cutting the shaft on the bottom side. I've screwed around trying to unscrew the damn nut and it isn't worth messing with when you can just cut it out. Of course not all shocks are designed to where you can do that.

Also you don't even need to cut the whole shaft, you just need to start a cut then take the shock and bend it back and forth until it snaps.

Also a healthy dose of wd-40 on the top nut helps a lot.
