i went and picked up my parts today and they included lots of good stuff { to me } including a set of late 40's i beleive , buick hubcaps that resemble a set of baby moons and trim rings that immediately found there way onto my effie. but anyway , flatty no.1 is a cast iron headed 21 stud center outlet beast supposedley of the vintage of 37 . i have no way of telling . the other two are a41 24 stud block , crank and cam , the other is a 24 stud 40 block this according to my fellow addict whom i got them from . three intakes and a few carbs , and a small pile of interesting hubcaps and taillights etc , from many various makes . now here is what im finding strange . the 37 had an intake on it casting no.1cm9425 with an electric choke and a stromberg aerotype 385323 carb also set up for electric choke . also have a carter carb 0-2425 that is electric choke that also fits this intakes bolt pattern / base . being new to flatties i did not know they offered an electric choke on flatties , is this right ? the intake has all the mounting provisions there and the choke is still there . also got a couple other intakes , one with a v shaped carb pad and one with a kind of rectangular pad with one sides corners rounded off . so any one can you tell me about this electric choke intake ?
Flatties didn't have electric chokes. Those are probably from Y-block engines in the late 50's. Carbs for flatheads come in 3 bolt triangular pattern for Ford or the rectangular 4 bolt merc pattern - and the 1cm9425 sounds to me like a 51 merc intake - which would bolt to a 37 block.
all right i'll get some pics , i still got some of the steering arrangement on the 55 to post for fomoko so i geuss i can get that done . im a major slacker !! so the intake might be worth keeping instead of selling ., like the rest of it i think i'll sell maybe .
ok guys i got some of the pics up but again they are in the gallery as i cant figure out how to put 'em here in the response . its entitled flathead parts
Some previous owner did a lot of mixing and matching with your stuff.
The two 24 stud flatties look to be 40-ish blocks. Check the bore. If they're 3 1/16" plus any overbore, they're more likely 40/41. Although they could be replacement blocks cast after 1945. Look at the bellhousing and see if you spot a '59' or '59A' and if so, its '45 thru '48 and the bore will likely measure 3 3/16". Doesn't matter much, as they're all basically the same from 1939 thru 1948.
The 21 stud flatty is a 37/38 from what I can tell in the picture.
The intakes:
The one on the left (rectangular carb mount with rounded off back corners) was originally on the 37/38 block.
The middle intake is a late 49-53 Merc. I don't know merc carbs well enough to tell what is sitting on it, but in addition to the merc stock carb some rochester carbs also fit that bolt pattern and probably several others - carter, stromberg, etc.
The intake on the right is Ford with the three bolt (triangular or V pattern) and probably came originally with one of the 40-ish blocks.
Hope this helps. Google stromberg carbs and you should find lots of reading. They were used on several auto mfg products, aircraft, boats, etc, etc. I bbl, 2 bbl, downdraft, updraft, side draft, etc, etc.
well what you told me gibes with what the guy i got them from said . the complete one is a 37 he says , the other two are a 40 and a 41 . i got a rochester carb , a stromberg which is on the intake with the aouto choke a holley and a carter . i was thinking about keeping one of the 24 studders to start a new build , hipo of course to replace the one in my 53 eventually , but dont know as one of the fellow addicts from another site says the early blocks aren't as strong . i put them up for sale too here and one other site and from the other got a couple of p.m's sayin i was wanting too much 200 for the 37 100 apeice for the blocks . i think someones tryin' to get a bargain so i think they are gonna sit here for a while always wanted to build a replica of my gramp's 40 sedan stock car ! now i got the correct powertrain . john also had the blocks checked by a machine shop to make sure they were solid ans no cracking in the valve seats so i'm proof positive having seen the receipt they are good . oh well still one h-ll of a conversation peice !
Quite a haul! I wouldn't turn loose of those blocks for $200 even if they hadn't been checked. I'd still clean them up a little better and have a look for myself before advertising them as "guaranteed crack-free". But they look like good solid stuff!
yeah the 41 still has the crank in it . its missing the rods and pistons . and i didnt and wouldnt advertise them as crack free just as is . every time i make a statement like that it comes back to bite me in the rear .
