Backfire while cruising down the road.....
After accelerating up to speed then letting off the gas fowr a few seconds, POW!!!. Is this due to a restriction in the exhaust? I've read that the stock exhaust is VERY restrictive. A late 80's early 90's Ford trademark.
I'm thinking about putting the Banks PowerPack system on it.

Anyone done this, what were the results........
Thanks
get to know the truck before you start modifying it.
welcome to fte.
now research your problem on the forum.
that can't be a cheap exhaust and i think it is overkill.

I'm waiting on a quote from Banks. The same system for my 99 454 Suburban was $1875. I ended up just adding a couple of Flowmaster Super 40's and dualing it out the back. (I like the drone, call me crazy.) It already had dual CATs though. How could a free flowing exhaust be overkill?
Especially on a Big Block. The guy I bought the F250 from said he's replaced the CAT twice. Finally his mechanic hogged out the CAT. It passed emmisions, but I wonder if this is causing a problem.
I do plan on tracking this problem down first, but know that the restrictive exhaust certainly does not help the performance.
Sorry guys, I'm new to the truck thing. I am more familiar with carbed 60's vintage muscle.
For the time being I'm just a
you must have gas and o2
must be unburnt fuel from lack of cats.
also must have a leak in the exhaust
does not have to be a lot of each
check for codes and TEST your sensors and harness

PowerPack® system
F-250, F-350 & SUPER-DUTY PICKUP: PowerPack liberates power enough for a truck-and-a-half! Look for top gains of +68 hp and +94 lb-ft torque and coddles your wallet with an overall 15% mileage improvement. Stainless-steel PowerPack provides better performance in all categories, from take-offs to freeway merging and towing big loads. Banks-enhanced Ford V-8s out-pace trucks in stock trim, eliminating 24% from the 0-to-60 mph distance.
I don't think you'll get "AS GOOD", an exhaust for 300.00 bucks IMHO. The torque tube headers alone are worth quite a bit.
$1,175.00 with Y-Pipe. (This is where most of the gains come from.)
I have alot of research, code deciphering, knick knack replacing, tune up work, alignment, tire issues to work out before I worry about the exhaust.

when i was in design college we had classes on propaganda and advertising.
always take claims from manufacturers with a grain of salt.

ECT sensor
ACT sensor - (it was ugly)
IAC Motor - (very sooty)
O2 sensor - (very sooty as well. I couldn't believe it only has 1, just before the flange to the catalytic convertor)
Spark Plugs Motorcraft ASF42C - gapped 0.44 - (it had Mighty Core, never heard of them, gapped @ .035
)MSD Cap and Rotor I had laying around, never used.
Coolant temp sensor (it was bad, gauge not reading, works good now)
Water Pump - (removed belts and found the awful screaching sound I've been trying to track down, bad pump bearings, almost frozen.)
MAP sensor - (bought a cheapo Wells unit at Autozone, had a surging issue on acceleration, put the original back, runs great. Don't buy cheap for certain things. Took it back, got my $60 back. Must be a reason the Motorcraft part costs $169)
Now I have a couple of other minor issues.
Hard starts. I have to give it just a bit of gas for it to start and idle. Once I do, it idles right up runs like it should.
Still rich. Not as bad as before the tune-up, but still rich.
I have a fuel filter to put on tomorrow. Could this cause the hard starting? Timing possibly off, I'll put a timing light on it tomorrow as well. It runs great after the hard starts though. Leaking injectors? Any other ideas?
(Also got new tires today. Front-end alignment, and brakes to follow in the next week. My kids will be driving this beast, gotta make sure it's safe)
Looking at this exhaust, I can install myself.
