Well after 130k miles on my truck the alternator crapped out.. I'm reading that the factory alternator isn't the greatest and is prone to failure.. Can anyone recommend a better aftermarket alternator? Also how can I tell if I have the 110 or 140 amp version?
In all likeliehood you have the 110 A version since I think the 140 A was only used in the dual alternator setup. There are a few companies that make upgraded alternators for our trucks, this is the one I've been considering but I have not made a purchase yet.
My alternator failed me at approx. 75,000km's and left me stranded 150km in the back country roads. This happened in 2005. At that time I couldn't find anything but rebuilds of the OEM and of course every rebuilt manufacture say there's is better than others.
I would be interested if there is a high quality after market as I am expecting my rebuild alternator will not last, and with my hobbies and work I cann't afford the down time or pateience to be stranded again.
I don't beleive the additional amps is necessary for stock electrical loads, I only need an alternator that has tremendous proven durability.
I'm also interested to hear if such a thing exists - please advise.
$227 + $105 core from the Ford dealer, who had them in stock, and was the best price I could find.... I want a HO version but I didn't have the luxury of time when I needed it The A/M versions were well over the $300 mark for the same output, and I had to wait on delivery. So needless to say there's a MotorCraft alternator back on the truck, for now
I checked all of the ford dealers around here.. they all wanted $310 + core for it... i'm just going to go with a remanufactured alternator from autozone.. got that one for 196 + core..
Every vehical i have ever owned ive just rebuilt the origional on the truck. The brushes in the rebuild kit dont seem to last as long but the cost savings are huge.At this point i just put new brushes in the alt once a year and everything seems good.My last three vehicals all had over 400 000 km on them with the origional alternators.I did have one that i had to change the bearings in but thats it.
