Intercooler Question

Is there a way to clean out the Intercooler? Since im rebuilding the turbo and doing the CCV mod I was just wondering if I really need to clean it out. Would feel a lot better it I knew that all the oil was out of the system. How big of a job is it to pull the intercooler?

you will never get it all out, let it ride it will work its way out on its own, its not worth the effort. you cant acces all of the passages inside to be efficient at it, all that will be inside is residue anyway,

Are you rebuilding your turbo just because it is worn? If you had pieces of impeller scatter you should be replacing the intercooler.

Yes because it was worn. The impeller looked good.

you can take out the inter cooler..dump some simple green into it.. shake it all around..rinse with plenty of water and let it dry...MAKE SURE IT IS DRY !!! others on here have done this...I thought about it too...I am in hopes for a winter beater this year and park my truck and do a lot of tinkering..I may go and talk to a guy that cleans radiators and see if he can do my IC..not sure if it would be worth the cost..IMHO residue build up can act as insulation.. its worth a shot if i can lower EGT's even only by 50*

I agree with Ron. After 285,000 miles I had less than a teaspoon of oil in my intercooler. I used simple green as well, Propped it up to drain and dry overnight.

Pulling the intercooler is not too bad, it can be done without removing the Radiator. The Oil in the intercooler will not just go away, it will dry in there leaving a permanent coating. When I cleaned mine, I went and bought a gallon of brakecleen, and sloshed that through the intercooler for a while, dumped it, then rinsed it with some SuperClean, and then flushed with a lot of water. A little moisture left in the intercooler won't hurt anything so long as there are no big puddles.
