Quick question, (2.9) on the upper intake manifold is it possible to get the two rear gaskets on backwards? I have a nasty leak back there and plan to remove it tonight and reseal. Recently did a rebuild took it out for test drive ran great for a few min then stumbled and died under load.
Been a while since I did mine but I think it's possible, and it would indeed create a bit of a vacuum leak. I seem to recall trying the gasket both ways to check for the best fit...
Yeh buddy that was helping indeed managed to put it on backwards. New question, now that i have corrected the problem it will only run when not under load as soon as it goes underload it will sputter and die.
I am still green around the ears so my questions is when we placed the distributor back in the timeing was not marked so we brought it to top dead center then backed it back a little, being that it had a hugh vacume leak on intial timing could we have put it in a tooth off ? It sounds great as a paper weight however i want to wheel.
You could have it tooth off...it's easy enough to do. Set the crank at TDC and check the rotor to make sure it's pointing at the number 1 terminal on the cap (if you were 180º out it wouldn't run at all, so at least you know you're in the ballpark.)
Check to make sure you have sufficient room to turn the distributor either way to time it, that is to say that if you turn the distributor as faqr as you can in either direction before it hits an obstacle, you want it to be pretty much in the middle of it's travel with the rotor pointing straight at the #1 terminal on the cap at TDC. If it's not close to that, then you're probably a tooth off.
Just wondering what is the second mark when timing, there is the timing mark and before it is a round screw? not btc, tdc,atc the actual mark that you use to line it up fer timing?
