My 1987 F-250 will not start in the morning. What really puzzles me is how this system/glow plugs work. I measured resistance between the glow plug harness and ground and read 0 ohms. I took one of the plugs out and measured between the where it connects to the harness and the body where it screws into the engine and read 0 ohms. I went to two auto parts stores and measured the resistance of three glow plugs between the interface to the harness and the body where it mounts to the engine and read 0 ohms. How can this system heat with a direct short to the engine?
Can`t help you on the resistance but on the starting problem your "wait to start" light should stay on for around 10secs. If much less than that you probably need new glowplugs. However another common fault is an air leak in the diesel system allowing diesel to drain back and air in. Check the little rubber injector bleed hoses and replace if necessary and check the water seperator as these can leak. Finally post your question on the pre-powerstroke forum further down, there are some very smart diesel guys there.
I really don't think my problem is fuel leakage. I was on a trip and noticed my alternater charging about 16 amps for a long period of time. Then it dropped back to around 8 amps but the "wait to start" light came on and stayed on for the rest of the trip. When I returned, I replaced the controller but it still won't start without starting fluid. That's when I started to check resistances and found what, seems to me to be, very strange readings. I really don't see how this thing can work if the battery voltage is shorted to ground.
I will take your advice and post on the pre-powerstroke forum.
