bought a 1995 escort from my neighbor every once in a while after sitting for 7-8 hrs pure white smoke comes out the exhaust at start up last about 10-15 sec then goes away.Does not do it while driving or at idle and not every time.I hope it's not a head gasket or a craked head!!! does any one have another idea?all ready put more money in to it than i wanted. All would be great.
You might chek the spark plugs to see if one or all cylinders have oily deposits on the plugs.
While the plugs are out it would be worthwhile to do a compression test. This will tell you if you have bad piston rings, cracked heads or blown gasket, or my guess... worn valve guides/seals.
I would guess valve guides or seals since ... when it sits, the oil in the head can leak past the guides and down to pool in the cylinder. When you fire it up you would get white smoke. Piston rings usually smoke more often and longer.
I am thinking it might just be steam because the weep hole is plugged up on the muffler. Once the engine has cooled, the water is running back towards the muffler and not exiting the weep hole and is burning off once the cat. converter and the rest of the exhaust reaches 300+ degrees.
Once the car cools, after the 8 hours, jack the car up and see if any fluid comes out the tail pipe.

Had an '86 Mazda B2000 that did the exact same thing.
