246000 Miles!

A friend of mine is the proud owner of a 99 F-250 V-10 Super Duty truck with 246000 miles on it and still going strong.
I asked him if he had the dreaded "cold start knock" and that tappet sound while driving and he said he has had all of that since it was brand new!
He added that he has had to have the heat shield on the Y pipe welded twice but other than that no problems what so ever.
Good news for me since I have the "cold start knock" and the tappet noise.
Doesn't seem to be something to worry about.

That is good news, I don't have the piston slap but definitely have the tappet noise so it is a relief to hear of someone else with this who has that many miles on their V-10. Of course I expected to go 200+ with this Ford, just like w/every Ford I've ever owned. How does he drive it ? Like I do, like I stole it ? How about his choice of engine oils and weight ? Anything unusual ? Or just every 3-5K and a good quality dino oil w/MotoCraft filters ? In all my years of Fords I have never had a catastrophic engine failure with the exception of a 56 Ford w/the 312 T-Bird engine in it. But I let the oil get too low so it was self inflicted. Other than that there has never been a Ford in my garage that its engine came apart, in 32 years of driving Fords. I see that GM is FINALLY going to put AWD/4WD in their full size vans. I can only hope and pray that FoMoCo does likewise. To me that would be the world's ultimate vehicle. 8-15 passenger capacity, 10,000+ pounds towing capability, hot rod power and that beautiful V-10 noise at WOT. Geez, somebody pinch me, I must be dreaming,,,

Nothing wrong with that!
Just more ammo in the dreaded oil vs gas engine debate.

I dunno guys...he said he has never changed the trans oil or the rear end oil. This guy is a roofing salesman and just drives the crap out of it. I don't see him as the guy that takes extra care of his truck.

4X4X4x4...that is one sweet truck you got there.! I was trying to figure out a way to get one of those myself but I'm just too upside down in my 2000 F-250 S/C 4X4 to make it happen this year. Maybe next year.

Vehicles are a large purchase.
Good Luck in your pursuit for a new one, just don't put the hurt on yourself financially too much doing it.
