My 00 is rusting out bad in several spots on the bed and fenders. Was thinking of getting a new old bed from a salvage yard and switching it out. Has anyone done this and how difficult of a job is it. I can't tell if any lines, cables, etc are attached to the bed or the frame.
A couple of friends and a couple of hours and it's done. Look around and you might find a bed the right color, I did. Bed, tail gate, rear bumper, bed liner and 2 wheels = $600.
Six torx head bolts removable from inside the bed, three screws at the fuel filler neck, a worm drive hose clamp at the filler neck on the bottom of the bed, and the rear wiring harness that unplugs. Get under it and spray the bolts with penetrant ..... several times, well in advance of doing the swap ( Use good stuff ie: Castles Thrust, Seafoam Deep Creep, etc). An air or electric impact helps a lot too.
This is it on Sept 29th. Lucked out finding the right colored bed. I ended up painting the gold on the bottom. It didn't match exactly, 97 vs 98 colors.
Thats odd they changed the two tone width between the two years, unless thats just the way the bed sits or something. It looks like the bed lower color is just a hair narrower than the body.
It did look a bit narrower. When not in direct sun light you could really tell the difference in the bottom trim color too. The bed has a pink-ish tint to it.But it's all better now ......
The bed is from a '97, paint codes JL/DZ = Dk. Toreador Red/Light Saddle.
The truck is a 98, paint codes JL/BA = Dk. Toreador Red/Light Prairie Tan.
