Valve stem seals

I have an 84 with about 120,000 miles on it and its now time to do the Valve stem seals. Now I'm planning on doing the compressed air through the spark plug method. Can anyone give me pointers on how best to do this so I dont drop a valve by accident?

If I remember this method correctly, you want to do it when both valves are closed, in the order of the firing order. The thing is, is if you have enough LP air pressure going in there, it should hold the valve up. Personally, I would just go ahead and pull the heads and recondition them, since I'm sure the combustion chamber and valves probably need a good cleaning.

So if I pulled the heads how would I go about cleaning the combustion chamber? Im talking about the piston top.

On my engines, I move the piston to the bottom, stuff thin plastic rope in there until it is about full, then push the piston up against the rope.

Plenty of parts cleaning solvent (even carb cleaner works) and a stiff-nylon-bristled paintbrush style brush. That's how I cleaned the tops of my pistons on my Ranger when I did the valve job. I have also used soft-bristle brass/metal-bristle type brushes/cup brushes that you use with a drill... a la cordless screwdriver/drill. You just have to be careful not to mess up the cylinder walls or the tops of the pistons. You'll also want to be sure and do an oil change afterwards, just to be safe.

I think I've seen that done before, rebo... pretty ingenious... and since you're not really disturbing anything timing-related, you don't have to worry about that being messed up, either. Cool
