I have a 2001 Ford 250 PSD and recently I have lost intial power while reversing. It is very noticable when I am pulling a heavy trailer. The accelerator is very spongy and I dont get any engine rev until it is pressed a quarter to half way down. Any Ideas?
Need to provide more details, i.e., manual or automatic? Is the rpms increasing on engine and not transferring the power? Have you had your codes read, I think autozone can do it or a buddy with a programmer. I have a 2002 PSD auto and my truck would strain to shift into the third and eventually reverse did not work. I had all kinds of codes, but when I took it in to get it check everything was ok. Finally the tech spent a morning with me driving around and we got it to act up. After tear down it turned out to be something minor but cost a fortune. It appears (maybe somebody smarter than me knows the right terminology and workings) the tranny has a constant discharge pressure pump for the fluid and there is a regulator for porting fluid back to the suction. This pressure changes as the tranny changes gears adding additonal ports and stuff. Well my problem was speculated as there was some dirt or debris effecting this from maintaining the proper pressure causing the erratic operation. Althought he actual tranny parts looked good (see pics in my gallery). Here is a pic of the culprit.
Thanks for the reply. My pickup is an automatic. The engine does not have an increase in rpm until the accelerator is depressed a quarter to half way down and even then it does not respond quickly. I noticed that I am also exhausting black smoke when the rpms finally do come up. This may be because of all the fuel being injected and not consumed. Do you think this still may be a result of the transmition discharge pressure pump? Thanks for your help.
Get the codes saved and see what they tell you. My 2002 is a drive by wire, electrical signal sent to the truck's brain verse a throttle cable. I would suspect your 2001 is also. Maybe the sensor has contacts which are dirty, kinda like a potentiometer (variable resistor) but I am just guessing.
