Turbo V-10

I'm tossing around the idea of getting a superduty with a V10 and putting a turbo on it. I need some info to help in the decision making though. (I might go with an older truck with a 460 instead.)

1- Strength. How much power/torque could the stock bottom end hold with good fuel and a conservative tune? My biggest concern is the powder metal rods. Have any of the supercharged guys broken parts yet, and how much power were they making?

2- Fuel. Are the 99+ superduties a returnless fuel system like most of the other modular motors? I would be doing a stand alone management system and a return style would be easier to work with.

3- Ignition. Did the V10's ever come with anything other than coil on plug ignition? Edis or tfi would be a lot easier to work with.

Fuel and ignition are NOT a problem....not sure why you think either way on the fuel is a turbo issue

the COP computer controlled ignition system is perfect for turbo or any other supercharging method because it is infinitely programmable

At modest boost levels the V10 is well suited for the linear power of a turbo application.... bottom end will hold up well unless you are thinking drag race explosive acceleration tests...

you only challenge is the labor, engineering, mounts, lubrication and tubing fabrication issues.... plenty of room and plenty of turbo variations as well as inter-coolers to do the modification.... in the end though you only really yield a motor with 350~450 HP for over 8~10K$$ of effort

can it be done certainly.... but so far in all the years the mighty 415 is out in 100s of thousand applications it has not been a popular enough mod for Banks, Edlebrock or any others to add to their R&D budgets....mainly because the typical V10 owners is very happy with the stock power levels....you will be completely on your own with a one of a kind custom build...the very most expensive way to have a very cool truck

I hope you have the deep pockets to go for it... If you do start a engineering and build thread...

I race a lot of different stuff and consider myself very competent in turbocharging.... feel free to ask more questions if you are serious on the turbo mod..

You may also want to review your states emissions laws. In Texas it is illegal to add a turbo to a vehicle which was not delivered as a factory offered and emissions tested and certified vehicle. I found this while looking for a way to delete the cat and yet remain legal.........but those days are long gone. It is now also illegal to install an off road exhaust system (cat delete) on a emmisions tested, sold for road use vehicle, even if you do not plan to use the vehicle on road.

Emmisions aren't an issue here.

The primary goal of this project, whether it be with a v10 or a 460, is to build everything myself inexpensively. I already have a holset turbo off an 11 liter cummins ($320) a complete megasquirt EFI system w/wideband ego ($500) and some other miscellaneous junkyard fuel system components. All I would need to buy is an intercooler and the piping, which I'll TIG weld myself.

I asked about the ignition and fuel because the Megasquirt would basically be plug and play with a return style fuel system and TFI or edis ignition. Individual control of 10 COP's and a returnless fuel system would be a lot of extra effort.
