Just out of curiosity, anyone else in the midwest use a 2wd expy to drive around when it snows? Im debating on whether I want a 2wd or 4wd SUV and I'd like to be able to drive it in the winter. In Ohio it has been known to drop a foot or two of snow near the lake so you never know what you will get. I've driven a 4wd Tahoe in the snow and had no problems so I would assume the 4x4 Expy would do just as well. But I didnt know if a 2wd would have enough weight over the rear wheels to handle tracking through the snow. Any experience with this would be helpful before I make any decisions. Thanks!
i live in western pa and can feel your ohio snow problems. I have a 4wd expy, and ran most of the winter in 2wd. Back in feb we got a few feet and i had to go to 4wd. I am running stock continenetal tires. If i had more agressive tires i might have been ok. But if you can locate a 4wd in the same price range go for it.
Thanks for that. And I know exactly the storm you're talking about. I was in Monroeville visiting my cuz that week lol. Not only was it -4 degrees it was snowing, then sleeting, then snowing some more! And I had to drive back to Ohio in that mess lol.
But anyway, I've seen some Expy's for decent deals around my area on autotrader and cars.com. But almost all of them are 4x4 so I havent been left with much choice. If you look in the south there are more 2wd models but I'd have to fly somewhere to drive it back. I'd only do that if the deal was too good to be true! But I like the idea of having 4x4 I just wasnt sure if it was reliable with higher milage trucks because whatever I buy is just for pulling a trailor every now and then so it will rarely get driven.
should be fine. I engage my 4wd at least once a monthe and drive it through the yard to keep everything moving. I don't want a surprise when i need it to work. I found mine on cars. com. I got it for 18,500. It is an 03 xlt with the FX4, 5.4 auto. it had 39,000 miles on it. a few minor blemishes in the paint. But is was in a jam. my wife was in an accident while i was out of town and i could only come home for the weekend. I emailed three dealers and let them know i had financing, and was looking at three expeditions. who ever gave the best deal won. I got it at freedom ford in VA. where i was stationed at the time.
We drove our 2WD 05 from Texas to Colorado to go skiing this past winter. We brought tire chains as a precaution but never used them. The Expedition never got stuck and did pretty well in the snow. It still has the original Continentals for tires.
