when i converted my 2x4 auto to a 4x4 standard i kinda expected something like this, as all my parts came from a beat up truck sittin' in a field for no tellin' how long, but it's got a bad bearing in the t-case making LOTS of noise. the chain jumps teeth on very hard acceleration in 4hi, I was just wondering, would i be better off to rebuild the t-case, (I have plenty of experience and tools to do the job) or should i just buy another from a salvage yard, $250.00 and a 160 mile round trip. any tips appreciated.

have you figured out the price it would cost you to rebuild it? I have no clue what it would cost but 160 Miles at 10MPG thats 16 gallons at 2.50, thats what it is here but im sure its more their, all you have to do is some figuring and figure out, its just a bunch of mounting holes compared to a complete rebuild! Hope this helps.
word to the downhome country redneck, yeah, gas is 2.80 here, but wifes car gets 32 mpg, so goin' after it is no big deal, i'll wrap it in old chamois and it'll be okay. thanks for the advice.

ya, gas would be a big deal when it comes to my truck, 32 mpg, thats a big step up from mine, thats what i would do is go to a junkyard, but make sure that it shifts in and out of everything fine, and go from truck to truck to see which ones best. GOOD LUCK!
Check with some of the junkyards in your area. They have started selling remanufactured engines, trannies and transfer cases in my area. A guy I work with put a rebuilt transfer case in his truck for I think around $700.
rebuild is my suggestion. that way you know what you got. i have a brother in law and two other friends who own salvage yards and the thing that pisses me off about them is that they always say "everything out there in the yard is good --- until it comes back". they most of the time they back up the part, but i think about how much darn labor it is change out the part only to find out that salvage part is not good either. lots of labor just try to save a few bucks. if your gonna but salvage, check it out real good, if you don't really know what your inspecting, take a buddy along who does. just like you got a bad t-case from that field, you could get another from a salvage yard.
alright thanks guys for the advice, i guess any bearings would prob have a number on them so not too hard to get ahold of, and gears and chain should be easy to get, thanks for the advice!
