I've got a 89 F250 with a inline 6. I've got a question about oil pressure problem. When you start it up the pressure comes up with no problem. Even when you run it a while it will still be good. Then the gauge will start to flux a little. It will progressly get worst untill it goes down so low that the idiot light will come on. If you'd stop the truck and give it a second or two it will come back up and the light will go out. Then when you take off again it will do it all over again. Oil level is good and the motor makes no sound of starved oil.(knocking, ticking). My other question to this is does the gauge and idiot light work off the same senser? (Thinking it might be a bad sending unit). If there is something wrong I'm leaning towards either a bad pump or the lower end bearings are washed out and the oil is not making it up to the sending unit. But if thats the case wouldn't the lifters start to rattle? Any help and advise is needed.
i would reccomend getting a manual guage for ~$10 at your local discount parts house, just for diagnostic purposes.. the factory guages are in steps, so they are far from accurate in most cases.
If you have a high mileage engine that the bearing clearances have opened-up on, you will have more oil than normal trapped or circulating in the engine. This can lead to low oil levels in the oil pan. A mechanic told me how to tell if this is happening, and a temporary solution. He said to fill the crankcase one quart overfull and see if the problem changes or goes away. If it works you can run this way if you want to delay rebuilding the engine. I tried it, and it works if that is the problem.
