Should have the new clutch kit this week, hopefully I can put it in this weekend. Any tips to make life easier with the install? Its a '99 250 SD, 5.4, 5 spd. Should the flywheel be turned, or only if any groves? The clutch actually feels pretty good, no probs, but the throw-out bearing is shot. Might as well replace everything whilst I'm in there.
I ordered it from Carolina Clutch, seems like good folks.
I've never done a SD clutch, but I've done plenty on older pickups with the 351's, 460's, etc
Since I'm in there, I always have the flywheel cut.
I even change the pilot bearing. (In the old engines anyway, the pilot bearing is pressed into the crankshaft .... DO NOT use a cheap bearing puller to get it out --- the bearing is easily mangled if you are not careful, and then it is a real problem to get it out.)
Absoultely check the pilot bearing. I lost a transmission due to worn out pilot bearing causing input shaft wobble and front bearing failure.
A good bearing puller is a must but I have done it without a puller. I used a die grinder and ground through the bearing.
For the flywheel. If you have no vibration and don't have grooves .020" deep you might get away with out turning it. You eyes will tell you the answer on this one.
WARNING. the transmission is HEAVY don't do this without proper support, jacks.
If you've got high mileage don't forget the rear main seal while you've got the transmission out of the way. It's cheap insurance once you've already got the transmission out of the way.
Good point 350, I was just thinking about the main seal today, I have 140,000 on the clock.
Clutch came in today so I geuss I got no excuse not to get dirty this weekend.
Get help under there. 1 man cannot take out a Super Duty transmission unless he has all the fancy tools, jacks and lifts like all those weekend TV programs on Speed and Spike.
Got the clutch kit in on sat. Replaced the main seal as well. It was pretty un-eventfull, just the expected inconvieniances, ie: one stripped bolt on the shifter mast (torx junk, replaced them with regular hardened bolts), lost the strap to the slave cylinder pushrod, found it after an hour long hunt, nothing to distressing.
Thanks for the tips, kudos to Carolina Clutch, fast shipping and great price.
