My '01 has a stock grill - I believe it is called a "billett" grill. Fully half of the surface area of the grill consists of the aluminum "vanes" that make up the grill. It alternates a 1/8" vane, 1/8" air space, 1/8" vane... Seems like it would be pretty bad for airflow.
In fact, if looking only at the grill with the most square inches of airspace, then the stock Excursion egg crate grill is probably the best.
Know of a source for them - the egg crate look? I've seen some that have the "hexagon" latice behind the 3/way devided grille in the link I posted, but I don't recall seeing anything w/ just the hex grille. I think the hex alone would flow more air - if that is what you are describing. Got a link to a picture?
I'm not as concerned with looks as airflow. I'm probably just a bit paranoid, but after burning up 2 'brubans w/ 6.5 TDs I'm not taking any chances. Any aftermarket options that are not as spendy as dealership prices?

Try eBay or even a trade with someone who wants a billet grill.
I wanted the 3-bar Super Duty grill for my old Excursion and ended up working a trade with a cop in Texas who was a user here at the time. Weird to drive around a few days without a grill but at least I didn't overheat!
