Cooling Fans

Has anyone done an electric fan swap for the stock water-pump mounted fan? I'm looking for any guides on the web for eliminating the horsepower-robbing fan clutch and putting a double electric fan on the radiator shroud, as a pull unit.
I'm really getting tired of the truck getting 'hot' while sweating at idle at stop lights.

Any comments or pointers toward a swap guide would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Axel F

I have not done the swap but sure wish I had before trying to leave San Bernandino bound for home in South Carolina with a bad clutch fan and a full load of body parts!
I didn't get far!

I say just go for it. I see them on lots of the dead parts trucks we get in. (maybe that's a bad thing? LOL!) But it looks to me that if you run them thru a heat sensor switch and don't run too small or too large of wires to them, everything should work great!

Maybe there is a problem with the water pump loosing the ballance of the fan that it might be designed to have?

ANyway, good luck and post your results. I need someone to copy!

There will be an advantage if you do a lot of highway driving, where you do not need a fan, and the clutch fan is just a drag. There is not going to be much advantage if you use it around town all the time, since you are going to need Hp to drive the factory fan, or you are going to need Hp to drive the alternator which will be powering the electric fans. Not much gain there.

If your engine is running hot I suspect you have a problem that an electric fan won't cure. Could be the fan clutch, but might be the radiator partially stopped up or the water pump going bad. My experience with Fords has been that with the cooling system in good shape, the fan clutchs almost never engage direct drive except during long periods of idling in 90+ deg. heat.

I think you have a fan clutch problem. My '83 used to overheat at idle. Replaced the fan clutch, and it stopped. When the temp of the air coming thru the radiator exceeds a certain temp, the clutch action of the coupling becomes less, and the fan spins faster to aid cooling. My truck has been a gas guzzling sweetheart for several years now, with no re-occuring problems!
