F-610-8

I have a f-610 dump truck that has developed a electrical short. A ground problem I think. When I attach the battery cable to the post it sparks and both pos and neg cables get hot. I want to put a new alternator on and rewire simply.
Starter-Dash and lights. Where can I find a wiring Diagram?

Have you tried disconnecting things to narrow the problem down? Could be something simple? Just have to pull some fuses, or disconnect a lead to find it.

Connect a volt meter in series with the battery lead. This will not heat up or drain your battery, must be in series. Like disconnecting the battery lead and insert the volt meter to complete the circuit. You will read 12v, (with short) as you unplug fuses or remove connections, the voltage will drop to zero when you find the source.

My first guess would be the alternator, a diode failed.

Larry, I think it is something that is not fused, other wise it would have blown a fuse if it got hot enough for the cables to get hot. First disconnect the positive battery cable. I would start at the power side of the starter relay and follow the power wire to the first connection and disconnect it there. Then take a test light and connect the clip to the end of the positive cable and the other end to the positive terminal of the battery. If you get a light that means that you still have the short. Reconnect it there and go to the next connector and do the same thing until you find your short. Also do as Blue 68 said you may have an alternator problem, disconnect it and do the test light thing again and see what happens. Be sure that all your doors are closed and that you have no switches on, because if you do you your test light will come on when you touch the battery. You can't have any closed circuits.

Welcome to FTE

You have an F600. There's no such thing as an F610.

F61 = F600 (gas) 2WD

C = 330 2V Medium Duty

K = Kansas City Assembly Plant

H53167 = 1970

If it was the head light it will blink when shorted, due to built in overload protection on the switch or circuit breaker behind the instrument panel. Mounted on the column support. Try disconnecting the lead to the started at the solenoid, too.

I have a tag that came out of the glove compartment that reads as follows:

FF F61CKH 53167 61
F610-8 -F3C- A _61922
02-23-70 1T
This might be the original owners card they printed. It is plastic with stamped letters. Thats where I got F610.
