Lately ive been having hard start problems with my truck. and the problem has been getting worse so i had a friend that is a mechanic look at it today and he was hooking some fancy electronic thing to the truck and he asked me to start it so i went and started it and right away a constant drip was coming from the bottom of the fuel filter and the side of the motor was really wet so i ran out and bought a new fuel filter and put that on and the drip is now gone. but on the bottom of the fuel filter this little black thing pushes on there and it connects to a hose and thats where the leak was. what is that hose for on the bottom?. isnt that were you drain the water from if you need to?
my friend started checking the GPs thinking this had something to do with my hard start problem and he was touching the wire that connects to the glow plug and two of them pretty much disinegrated in his hand and the wires broke. he then told me to call the parts store and buy some "glow plug connectors" but i called many stores and they all said they didnt have them and to check with Ford. So i called ford and they said you couldnt buy just the connectors. they said i needed to buy a completely new GP wiring harness and it costs $500 and it wont be in until the middle of the week!. does anybody know of a easy fix for this or somewhere i can buy the connectors?
Well i think i found a nice redneck fix and a way to save $500.
i went ahead and bought some electrical connectors and wire from the local auto parts store for about $10 and tried to solve the problem and i think i did it. after i finished i went to start the truck. The Wait light came on for a few seconds went off and the truck started no problem...but the real test will be tomorrow morning after it sits all night.
I drew a bit of a picture for you guys to look at the way i fixed it. Let me know if this was a good idea or if i just caused more problems. Thanks
I went to the International dealer and got a glow plug harness for 80 bucks. I can't see it being more than 130 for anyone else. If you have spade connections on your glow plugs I have a harness hanging up in the garage right now. If your harness use bullet connectors at the glow plugs I can get you the International part number for it.

My plugs have bullet connectors. Can you please get me that part number?. I just talked to ford today and the guy told me the glow plug harness is $500. so if you know where i can get it for 130 then ill be really happy.
It looks like my cheap fix is going to work for now. But i dont know how many of the other 6 wires going to the plugs are brital and corroded. I only fixed the two so im still hoping to get a new harness its just that $500 is something i cant really afford right now.
I'll grab the bag tomorrow and post as soon as I can. You'll have to take your original harness apart to change the glow plug harness. This is just the glow plug harness and nothing else. That is why Ford wants so much. They are selling you a complete engine harness.

Evidently you got put together right but you need to redo it. The harness for the glow plugs are actually made up of fusable link. If they were fried then something went wrong with the plugs and caused a hard draw.
You can buy fusable link in a roll like wire. It may hard to find but it is out there. Redo your harness in that and you be good to go.

What do you mean i will have to take my original harness apart?. Ive never really liked wiring. Theres so much that can go wrong i usually just stay away from it...so i dont like the sound of that.
Ill have to call ford tomorrow and see what id be getting for $500. And if it is the complete engine harness them im going to give the guy hell and ask for just the glow plug harness.
All you have to do is take the loom off and take the tape off the harness and just replace the harness with the news one. Two hours tops for a rookie.
So i open the split loom...pull out all the wires for the glowplugs...and then i assume the harness just unplugs from the relay?. then i plug in the new harness to the relay and run all the new wires into the split loom?

The harness on my older 6.9 has the two wires for the glowplugs in a main plug with the other wires. You will need to take that plug apart or splice those wires. I don't about my 94 model without looking.
when i changed the glow plugs on my 88, all the insulation fell off the tips, and 4 connectors broke off the wires. i replaced them with crimp connectors, and then used heat shrink tubing on them. that way 2 years ago, and not 1 lick of trouble since. and i saved a couple hundred dollars to boot. total cost for the fix was under $5

If you still have that spade harness, I'd be interested in it for my son-in-law's '83 F-250; let me know how much, and don't forget S&H to 87111...
Is one type of connector on the GP's better than the other? (I think we will need to replace all the GP's AND the harness, so now might be a time to change, if one is better than the other...). If spade terminals are okay; that is what is on there now...
I sent you a private message abqjohn. I'll be in the truck tonight so I can get the part number for the new harness 1957F100. I'll probably post again around 11:00 EST.
