My 1997 with a 4.2 instantly started running terribly last night while going down the road about 60 mph, was shaking so bad I thought I was having transmission problems. When I came to a stop I still felt a terrible shaking in the truck. This morning I had the codes pulled "#2 cylinder not firing"- I changed the plugs & wires & still had the problem. I then changed the coil pack & the problem was resolved. My question is while changing the plugs I disconnected the negative battery terminal, which I know clears the codes. When I started the truck (before installing the coil pack) it ran terribly still. I drove it around for about 20 minutes trying to let the computer learn hoping this corrected the problem. Even with it running terribly the code never returned. Any ideas why?

I know from personal experience that the 4.2 motors have a bad problem with clogging up the egr ports in the intake. Each cylinder has its own runner for the egr and they will get clogged up over time. The one we had last year that did this, all the ports were clogged except for cylinder #2. When the egr kicked in, it ALL went to #2 instead of all 6.
With that many miles it wouldn't suprise me if this is the issue. The only way I know to fix it would be to take the intake off and clean the fool out of it and the runners for the egr.
