I put a new Holley 600, vacuum secondaries, on my Windsor a few days ago and I got it running good. (bigger jets, fixed the gas leak.) But the secondaries are not opening. I need some advice on what to look for. I don't have much experience working on carbs so I could a little help. Thanks!
You won't see them open. They only open when you're driving and putting the engine under a load. If you're just reving the engine in neutral or park, there is no load on the engine and they won't open.
You may need to buy a quick change secondary spring kit. Which allows you to tune your secondary opening time. The kit & springs come with instructions on how to tune. What fmc400 said is true. They only open under load.
Would I be able to notice when the open by how the truck acts? I used to have a Holley on a 300 and when the barrels kicked in it felt like the truck would downshift. Not sure if they're suppose to do that though.
Make a small wire clip or use a hairpin and place it on the vacuum secondary plunger rod up against the casting so that it can slide on the rod when the rod is pulled up. Do a heavy throttle road test then check to see if the clip has been moved down due to the vacuum plunger pulling the secondaries open. You checked the diaphragm for leaks or a tear?
You may need a lighter spring. They usually come with the heavy black spring. Get the Holley spring kit and try the natural one. Usually you can feel them open around 3500rpm.
It is kinda gradual though.

If you can feel them open this is because you have a bog, a properly set up
Holley you should not feel the secondaries just a smooth transition.
