Transmission temp gauge question

I have a 02 psd 4x4 cc with auto transmission. Runs great no problems but I just noticed that the transmission temp gauge goes from the bottom (at start up) to half way up as soon as I crank it up. Temp gauge takes a while to show warm up but not the transmission gauge. Fluid level is fine no burt smell just serviced about 2 months ago. Is this normal ? I just never noticed it before. thanks rugerman

The temp gague will go to the middle of normal once the trans has warmed up above 50F (10C for you Canadians!) This time of year that sure doesn't take long!

Well that sort of expains it, the temp last night got down to a chilly 80 here last night and they are predicting a balmy 101 or so today. But its not the heat its the humidity that gets you. Unfortuneitly we've got both right now, the heat index is about 115. thanks for the reply rugerman

That factory installed xmission gauge is just an indicator - it indicates when you have already overheated your xmission.
A good aftermarket gauge is cheap insurance and will tell you cool it down BEFORE your xmission gets toasted.

I've done some research on this because mine was doing the same thing. The PCM is what sends the signal to the tranny temp guage on what to read. It gets its info from a thermoresistor that is mounted inside the transmission on its valve body. The problem with a resistor is dirty connections can add to this to give a poor signal to the PCM. Clean your connections between the PCM and the sensor, or it could just be the sensor itself. An after market guage would just be less headach but if your like me, if its a guage I want it to at least look like its working right!
