1994 VSS Questions

Chasing an issue with my ABS light and an erratic speedometer... From some searching and a quick post, it sounds like my VSS is the culprit. The suggestion was made to remove and clean, which I will try, but in the long run it's probably time for a replacement. So, two new questions:

1.) How/what do you clean this thing with? Is it just some electrical contacts, ie shoot it with contact cleaner and glob on a little dielectric grease and give it another go?

2.) NAPA can't seem to find a VSS for my 1994 that is rear-axle mounted; they keep wanting to give me one that fits on the transmission... Has anyone got a valid part number for a 1994 VSS?

The part # is: F85Z-2L373-AC (This is actually considered an ABS sensor)

Bought mine here: http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...?siteid=214072 , but by the time you pay shipping you might be $$$ ahead to go to dealer for it. ($18.19 + $9.50 shipping +7.9%tax -VS- 25.27 +7.9%tax)

Before replacing this part though, I drained and cleaned the rear axle. It improved funtion of sensor some, but was still problematic. Wipe grunge off of sensor and exciter ring inside axle. I use lithium or die electric grease on wire connection to sensor (location of sensor is subject to harsh conditions).

Regards,
Ken

the VSS sensor is on the transmission.. not the rear axle... the ABS sensor on the rear axle is another sensor

After 1991, it's all taken care of at the rear axle...

For future search reference, I replaced the VSS and everything is back to normal! No more ABS light, and the speedo is steady as a rock!
