My ABS Problem
Since I replaced my left front hub 20,000 miles ago, and I now have 163,000 miles on it, I'm thinking I should locate a new hub. Jack up the front end and cannot feel any kind of wobble like the other one had when it failed. Hmmm. Let's take a closer look.
Remove rim and tire, and turn the hub by hand. I "think" I hear what could be bearing rumble, but it sounds like it would be the needles, not the main hub bearings. Since I haven't performed the needle-bearing service since I've owned the truck, it MAY be 163,000 miles on those needles' grease. Hmmmm, this could get more expensive than just a hub!
So, I take the hub off, only to find the needles are happily swimming in lubricant, and all surfaces are shiny. Whew! I STILL can't feel any hint of main bearing roughness, and now even the previous noise is gone. The hub is OK. Whew again.
So, now I'm thinking, maybe the ABS tone-wheel sensor is bad. I still have the one from the other side's old hub, so I decide to change it. Since I now have a gaping hole into the "inner workings" of my hub, I remember Cookie's technique of greasing his hub bearings through the sensor hole. I pump about twenty pumps of CAT green chassis all-purpose grease into the hole (I use it for the tie-rod ends), and it's not oozing out through any seals, so decide that's enough, at least for this year. I clean the yellow o-ring and using grease liberally, I re-install the hub. Connect the replacement sensor, run the wiring through the "loom", and make the connection.
Using Guzzle's site, I get the torque specs and tighten the four nuts properly.
Go to replace the caliper, and get to thinking about Guzz's site again. Hmmm, upgraded caliper slide pins. Better check mine. Sure enough, they're reaching the end of the grease's life, some rust has developed on one of them, and there's a couple of flat spots on it from wear. Gotta order the new ones, anyway, so I just swab some of the CAT grease onto the pins and into the holes. It'll be good enough until the new pins arrive and I can do the job right. Hello, powerstrokeshop.com
I replace the calipers, with the assistance of another trip to Guzz's site for torque specs, and the wheels. Lower jack. Thanks, Guzz!
Start engine. Self-test goes through all the lights, including the ABS, which blinks off and right back ON. Hmmm, guess it wasn't the sensor.
Take the truck around the block and the brakes actually feel a bit better with the guide pins lubed. But I still have that ABS light lit.
I've accomplished some things that I wanted to get done anyway before the road trip to Lexington KY in late September. I used Cookie's lube method (I'm going to build an zerk adapter for that hole), and I lubed the needle bearings. Ahh, peace of mind.
But I still have that light....
It was a blown 60-amp ABS fuse. ;-))

We'll see if it was just a fluke. If it returns, then I gotta problem. Right now, none. ;-))
