We the handrail lasted 3 week longer than I thought it would . On the 07-08 company truck we just got. Was getting cement blocks on paletloaded in and guy tried to load before I got back there, Lets just say I got extra scrap he hit the bump for the hander and tore all loose. I thought handle step was bad Idea.

This truck replacement gate and other 4 truck we got we are going to remove them . Plat seel any one . Still the best truck But need some work .

I'm not surprised. I thought it looked cheesy from the git-go. Plus it just screws up your tailgate for sitting or sliding things. The step looks like a leg breaker too and an accident waiting to happen. I don't have an '08 but already know that I would not order that option.Bill

I am not surprised, it looked flimsy anyways. It was a good idea from the start, i guess, but it turned out to be lame in the end. Ford probably invented it so they could compete with GMC/Chevy on the extra (car like) luxury bling-bling crap. I dont need all that extra stuff, i just need a good tough work truck (only in a Ford)!

I had been wondering how long it would take for someone to mention this had happened. I think the step is an ok idea, but as soon as I saw the handle thing I knew it was going to be a PITA and get broken easy. My guess is Ford had to put some kind of handrail because of a crazy OSHA rule or something like that though.

Looks like lostin90s is the first, but I have a feeling he will not be the last we hear about.

The step just scares the crap outta me. It seems okay going up. But if you step down onto it, facing forward, and your toe misses the step and your leg drops into the hoop, you will pitch forward off that thing and easily snap a leg.

I actually wanted to put on 08 tailgate on mine because of the step, after reading this I don't want to anymore. Next time the wife complains about me being on this site all the time I will let her know that it just saved us over $1000. I saw an aluminum step ladder like tailgate step at an rv show a few months ago, it was nice.. but it was over $200.

Each to their own, but with the exception of the OP who had someone else break his, I find it interesting that those who bad mouth the step don't actually have one. I like mine, especially at the end of a long day, when loading up tools for the trip home. Oh yeah- I also loaded up my son-in-laws crashed Suzuki GSX-R using a harbor freight ramp and got no interference from the bump around the handle.

Not looking to be disagreeable, but if you're a guy that takes care of your equipment, and works carefully, the step can be a good thing. YMMV.

I know of several that bit dust . But I do take care of stuff .My old CO . truck had 89000 miles and no serious scatches. And I load /slide things on pallets in bed all time. They sould have recesssed it. The suzuki wieghs nothing compaired to bundle of 2x4 or a cube of blocks .

I get pallets/skids loaded on and off my truck on a reg basis and that handle and step would get in the way big time. I would think dirt and all kinds of crap would get jammed around the handle.

Nice thought and may be handy if you don't use your truck as a truck.

Every truck I have owned has had two steps built in, and a handle with each.

Tire = Step

Bed Rail = Handle

Sheesh...

I removed my handle the first week I had my truck. Just put on a regular inspection cover and LineXed the whole thing. The step is handy when loading my dirt bike or getting into the bed with the tailgate down. I can see a "face plant" if you are not careful stepping down.

Mikey, that sounds like a really good idea. I didn't realize the handle could just be swapped out like that.

Wow guys lets back up a minute. The OP stuff broke because a forklift hit it with a 3000lb load of block. That is not what that handle was made for, it was made to hold a person. Plenty of people use their trucks like a truck and would not do this. If this is the way your truck is going to be used then it is your fault for getting that option when you should have known it was going to be torn up.

I am still considering getting it on my 08 that I am looking to order soon. The way to judge the step and handle is to wait and see how it holds up in the long run for people that use it to hold people. The company beside my office uses F350 to carry around full bed reefers (like a ice truck) and the drivers love the step because they drop the tailgate and climb into the reefer a hundred times a day. That is what it was made for.

I think the point is... it gets in the way.
