One more cat ?

I'm confused my friends!

I've been trying to get the cats on my 97 F150 4.2L 5MOD replaced. I know that may sound unusual, but I want everything working the way it's supposed to work even if my truck does have 213K miles on it.

My problem is, I have one exhaust shop telling me that even though I have 4 cats on this truck, they can replace them with 2 and I "shouldn't" have any CEL or other problems. I have another shop telling me, No way! You have 4 cats and replacing them with only 2 is going to give you a code and a CEL almost immediately.

Anyone had any experience with this before? Can I go with just 2 cats and not have that dreaded constant CEL?

Thanks!
Mark

The first shop is correct, and the second one it trying to get in your back pocket. 2 Catalysts are all that's needed, and will not get you a CEL for any reason as long as they are quality pieces.

The first 2 cats aren't actually cats anyway, they are pre cats that assist the "real" cats in heating up to proper temp quicker. JL is absolutely correct in telling you that 2 cats are just fine and will most likely work better than the 4 that you have now with 2000,000+ miles on them. You will most likely notice a surprising difference in the way the truck runs. Keep your money close but dont skimp on quality, our children are depending on it...Good Luck

Thanks guys.
That's what I was thinking too. I also found out later yesterday that the 2 replacements are much larger in size than the 4 originals so the capacity is about the same.
