EOS (Engine oil supplement)which has a high zink content. Used in older cars, for engine break in and as a supplement. Is that something that can be used also in the ol'flatties??? or does Ford have something that I don't know about. If we can use it, best snap it up, cause (They) just stoped making it.If Ford has something like that for origanal unmodifyed flatheads, would sure like to hear about it. Thanks knuck

They have a few oils that they recommend.

Info on the Valvoline VR1 -- Note Zinc level is at 0.13 (? units here, I assume it is PPM which puts it a little above the normal 1991 Zinc levels). I also read that extra high levels doesn't protect better. There is a basic level for protection (and I am not going to even guess what it is) and the excess is used to extend the life of the motor oil -- allow it to protect longer. I wish that the oil companies would give us a really good breakdown of their logic, I understand the idea of removing it for the new none flat tappet cams -- but what research do they have. I know they added other anti-oxidants and anti wear compounds -- its just that there are still too many unkowns still.

Sorry, the above ZDDP measure is assumed to be in percent of weight, not PPM. There is a factor of 10,000 to get PPM or % Wt x 10000 = PPM. So I would assume the PPM of the Valvoline above is 1300 PPM ZDDP. Even though I got the units wrong the, the level would still be slightly higher than the levels that I found for 1991 oils.

Here is an interesting thing that I found in an academic article:

They used a novel device to determine wear and found that when ZDDP is the only additive to mineral oil, at levels between 0.05-0.02% there was a linear effect on wear (higher level was better). At less than 0.02% the ZDDP actually increased wear over pure mineral oil. So if ZDDP were the only anti wear additive in motor oil the 0.06-0.08% level that is currently used, is getting to the point where it is linearly correlated to concentration.
