Good Idea or No??

A friend of mine has a 1984 F-250 2 WD reg. cab long bed
its got around 400,000 on it the cab is pretty rotten but found another one for $150 He wants $400 for it, it has stacks and a goose neck ball in the bed.
I have horses and also a 1996 1/2 ton Chevy
But currently drive a 1997 Neon to work for gas milage and to keep miles off my truck

So to the point.... I have access to free alternative fuel for a diesel
I'm thinking of selling the Neon use that money to pay off a bill and buy this truck Would that be a mistake with the high miles on this truck

I'd like to use the truck to haul scrap and wood as it is a 3/4 ton
just worried about having problems with it

Thanks for all and any advice in helping me with this Decision
Brian

I'd be a bit concerned about the mileage. I've read that 500K is not difficult for an IDI, but just past 400K seems to be the average.
Not that I wouldn't buy it and drive the wheels off of it at that price, but I'd be hesitant to go through the labors of an engine swap with such a large and heavy engine with that kind of mileage because you won't know how soon you'll be doing it again.
Of course, that's a personal opinion, only you can put a price on your time.

It is worth that in scrap. I would 400 for it if it will drive down the road.

The gas mileage question would be a large factor also. Plus the insurance might be higher. Also you know for sure what you have in the Neon for a dependable vehicle. If you use full veg oil. Do you live in a cold part of the country. If you do. The veg oil will get thick at 32 deg unless you go to the expense of heating it. These are questions you need to ask of yourself.

Ohio

I live in Ohio, and it does get down below 30 degrees
my alternative fuel choice is used ATF as i know a few guys that work in a shop
and i plan on running it half and half in the winter
it does go down the road fine, possible tranny issues,
I've found used ones for $150
I also work in a shop, so i can do the work myself
I know the injector pumps can get pricey
I guess its just kind of a gamble, i could buy it and put a million miles on it or it could blow up in a week
i think i might be able to throw rods and main bearings in it with some new injectors and hope it run for a long time
or yes haul it to scrap and get some money and find another Neon

Thanks for all your help
Biggest reasons for wanted this truck
I owe a couple thousand in credit cards like to pay off with Neon money
i'd like a older truck to haul wood and scrap metal etc.
it has a goose neck ball in it
and its a diesel which i'm hoping to use alternate fuel and still drive it back and forth to work

Just looking for some outside reasoning before i did something i'd regret

If the chebby is in good shape, Id go for it. If you didnt have the other truck, Id be weary of getting rid of a decent, reliable, and better MPG car. Maybe you can get rid of the other truck, unless you need a truck for everyday use, untill you get this "new" truck in reliable running condition.

Like already said, its a personal choice, you do what you feel is best.
