I own a 97 Expy with the 5.4 and it recently popped up with codes p0171 and p0174. After doing a search, I found that I need to check my PCV hose (I already replaced the PCV Valve and cleaned the MAF). Thanks to whomever for all the handy information on this forum.
I have a 97 Exp Eddie Bauer 5.4L V8. I just received the P0171 and P0174 code after the check engine light came on (I went to Autozone and they did the scan for me for free). I actually had a loud hissing sound under the hood, and my truck would begin to stall at low rpm. I just could not determine where it was coming from; I could only tell it was in the vicinity of the IAC.
Spending time on this forum helped me to look for this PVC elbow that come on the PVC line, and sure enough the PVC elbow was bad (seated right by the IAC, nice and hidden). I would have not found that elbow without hours of looking since it is hid. Also hard to pinpoint the noise with the engine running.
Unfortunately, I could not find this elbow nowhere in town, and had to go to Ford and get the entire PVC Hose (PVC Valve, Hose, elbow) for $30. I was hoping to do the job for $5, but could only find the part online, but needed it now in order to get the truck running.
I tell you this forum is definitely good. Saved tons of money by not going to the dealer. Part $30 and takes literally 5min to install.
Car is running great now. No hissing. I will have the check engine light reset at Autozone.

Or you can do what I did and unplug the battery for a few minutes. My wife had to reset her clock and radio stations, she was willing to do that rather than me drive to the Zone and get it reset.
THat's true. But what I've decided to do is leave the codes. I actually saw some pretty cheap OBD II scanners on ebay ($20 - $40). I'm actually bidding on one now. I would like to be able to try it out when I get it, to see if it will read and reset.
When my check engine light came on, Autozone was closed so I like the idea of being able to check it at my convience. I can use this for my wife's truck as well as my car.
I think the $40 scanner will only retrieve codes. And it will only give you a code number, not a description. In order to clear codes and get code descriptions, you would have to by the $120 scanner
There are $40 scanners advertised on ebay that does clear codes and show the generic and manufacture codes. I'm not too concerned if the descriptions are not given because you can find them on line. The one I bidded for does clear codes, and give the code numbers, also there is a book that comes with it that describes the codes.
I am having the same codes pop up on an '00 F250 with the 5.4. Originally it was the Mass airflow sensor was dirty and ran great for about 6 months. Now I have the same code along with a ticking sound that wasn't there before. Tell me more about the "noise" you had and where the the PCV elbow is. Oh yeah I picked up an OBD code reader that gives a "description" ie. bank 1 lean, at Autozone for about $80.
Any help would be much appreciated.
There is a ton of info on the board, but if you have a 04 and newer it is hard to come by. I wish they would have a navigator only board or break up the years. I know it is wishful thinking and I have asked. Maybe if some other members ask we can make it happen.
