5.4 unresponsive

I have a 1999 Superduty with a 5.4 that will not rev up when I press the gas pedal down, the engine idles a little rough then dies. Anybody have any ideas on where to begin?

It sounds like you might have a clogged catalytic converter. Unhook the exhaust downpipe at the Y, before the catalytic converter and try your test again.

Clogged fuel filter would be my guess. Gets enough gas to idle but not to accelerate

I originally thought maybe a clogged cat, but the problem is kind of intermittent. Sometimes it runs good, occassionally though it is unresponsive

Yes, I went through the same thing. It took me 9 months to find out it was the converter. The truck I was driving at the time gave no error codes, some days would run decent, other days wouldn't have enough power to get out of it's own way. I cleaned and replaced the MAF, changed the plugs and coils, replaced fuel filters, cleaned the injectors, replaced the EGR valve and controller, just did everything I could think of, when a technician at the dealeship (who was as puzzled as I was) disconnected the Y pipe on a hunch and took the truck for a spin. He was so tickled he had found the problem he actually called me up and told me he just pulled away from a stop sign in my truck and had smoked both tires!

Plus, it cost nothing to disconnect the Y pipe and test it. That fits my budget very well.

A 90 year old and still working electrition friend said he took his off, banged it against a railroad tie a few times till he could see through it and put it back on. He said after that his mileage inproved and no more problems.
