Hey group. Have been thinking about replacing the stock muffler on my truck. I would like something to help it breathe a little better and get a decent sound out off it. I have removed the soup bowl and it seemed to help some with power and mileage. I figured maybe I would open up the exhaust end also. I plan on keeping the exhaust stock except for the muffler change. I do not have a lot of time or money to put in an exhaust system at this time. Just looking for something a notch or two above stock sound, but not obnoxious. I have used Cherry Bombs and Thrush mufflers on other vehicles but they were all gassers. Not sure how they would sound on the 7.3 na idi. Hope to here some opinions from you diesel doctors! Thanks
I had a "banks" muffler on one of my trucks for years and after about 10 years it gave up. I don't know a specific model or part number but I liked it real well. It had a good low sound that I like. I am not into the loud stuff anymore. Getting old I guess.
On my 94 F250 7.3 IDI N/A, I replaced the stock muffler with a single 2.5 X 36" glasspack muffler. It has a deep sound sort of like a big block gasser with turbo mufflers.
I put a 1-chamber flowmaster on mine, deep rumble, but not to loud. To save a few bucks they have a generic one out. supposed to sound like a true flowmaster but I have never got to hear one yet. I took duel glasspacks off of mine, could not stand the popping, guess it just depends on your taste.
have the banks exhaust on mine but i cant really hear it unless im driving next to a wall with the window down. Also my truck is turboed so that also quiets it down a lot. Took the muffler off one day and it didnt seem to be a whole lot louder. Thought about puttin a flowmaster on cause i just love that sound.
That's a good idea, I replaced that cr*ppy Ford muffler with a glasspack on my 7.3L ($85 installed) and it sounds great. Not annoying load like a gasser, just sounds strong while accelerating, but just a gentle rumble when cruising.
Having the very same thing done to the '85 6.9 tomorrow.
Remove the soup bowl alone didn't really do anything for me, but the two combined really seem to make it breath better. I feel more power and gained a bit in mileage too.
