I am going to be driving my 70 f100 to SE Kansas to hunt this year, so I am changing my gears for better gas mileage. It is the first time for me to change the gears. Already got the gears out and got a match for splines. Installed new bearings about a year ago with seals. I was told to use black silicone for the seal. Is there a gasket for the pumpkin? Any tips for this change over you might have would be helpful.
ther is a gasket for the pumkin, your best bet is to buy a kit that includes a new crush sleeve and shims. a dile indicator with a magnetic base come in handy when setting the backlash.
70T, The gasket is very thin like a sheet of paper. I have seen a lot of rust/red looking sealant used as well as other colors. You wouldn't need a high temp one, but silicone alone should be fine. It wasn't as widely used or may not have been available when out trucks were new.
You will need to change your speedo gear with the rear gear change.

If you are changing the gears for going hunting, are you going to change them back later? If you are look into getting another 3rd member with the gears you want to run, so with 2 differant gear set-ups you can switch back and forth without tearing the 3rd member down each time.

Would it be wise to do all of this? Would it be difficult to install?
Yes when he says center section it is the same as the pumpkin or 3rd member. And like some of the other posts said if you are going to swapping gears a lot it might be wise to find anther 3rd member and install your new gears in it. If you install gears in the 3rd member you have you will need to install a new crush sleeve at a minimum that’s if you keep from tearing up any of the other parts. And you will need to set the backlash so a dial indicator will be needed. Also you will need to break the new gears in like breaking in a new motor, run the truck a few miles to heat them up then park it and let cool, and do it again several times before you go on a long haul or the gears may become soft.
I will not be changing the gears again for a while. I have a 96 f350 psd to do the heavy stuff. So will it be necessary to do the backlash, crush sleeve, ect.?
70T, Your F350 does not have a a Ford 9 inch in it. It is the Ford 9" that is easily swappable. Every Nascar race car runs a variation of the 9 Inch today.
There are several different names for the removable center section, Hogs head, Pumpkin, Chunk, etc. As long as the axle spline count is the same, you can swap a 4.11 ratio out for a 3.00 ratio or any other ratio and be on the road in about an hour.
