I have just recently purchesed a '96 F150 2WD with 5.8 motor, E4OD trans., 3:55 LS rear. The truck has only 9,000 miles on it and has been very well taken care of...(really, like new).
I am in the process of changing out all the fluids. I would like to go all synthetic, AMS or Mobil 1. I have contacted both company's and they both told me that their synthetic ATF's would be compatable with my trans and also any residule fluid (Mercon) that I cannot purge from the system.
I am concetrating on the trans. (E4OD) right now and read an article on the site by Mark Kovalsky about changing fluid on a E4OD and the procedure sounds like a good one with regards to getting most of the fluid out of the trans without using a commercial flushing machine.
Has anyone had any experience (good or bad) using Mark's procedure? (in the articles/specs section under transmission)
Does anyone have any thoughts or negative experince with using synthetic ATF in a E4OD.
Under normal driving conditions, you wouldn't really need synthetic oils. However, the synthetic oils can tolerate higher temps...it really depends on the type of driving you do.
Double check your owners manual about the rear end; you may not be able to use synthetic gear oil in the rear with a clutch type locker.
Last time I changed the trans fluild, I drained the pan and converter. I'm pretty sure I got most all of it that way because I had to put nearly 19 quarts back in it (B&M pan I have holds a couple extra quarts over stock)
Thanks for the info. I like the AMSOIL also, just having a hard time finding it here in MI.
Did you add any friction modifier to the rear or straight synthetic gear lube?
They have spray type cans of tranny flush . I use it to flush out rad and line before reinstall trannys. works fine . I got the e4od down to 4 1/2 hrs in and out . Lets just say they are always out .

First off....Welcome to FTE mtrctylarrry!! I apologize for not welcoming you to begin with.
I did not add any friction modifier to my rear end. I have a worm-gear Posi-traction, not a clutch type.
It should be noted however, that Amsoil gear lube has friction modifier in it. If you use said product, it will work with your clutch type LS.
Hope this helps,
Mike
p.s. Keep that E4OD cool (aftermarket stacked plate cooler, and plenty of fresh fluid ~20-25K) and it will work flawlessly for years to come.
