I had my AC serviced last year on my 96 PSD with 205,000 miles. They flushed the system and changed the Freon. Seems the previous owner had mixed R 12 with R 134A. Before the flush and fill the AC wasn't all that great, afterwards it was better but not freezing cold. We are into the throws of a Charleston SC summer where the temp today will top out at 102 - 105 couple that with our humidity of 50-90 percent makes it feel like 115.
Just fired up the truck and opened the hood with the AC on max the line and accumulator are both ice cold and sweating. I checked the damper with the white vacuum hose and it stays extended out to the firewall on all settings, AC norm, AC Max, Heat and moving the thermostat from cold to hot. Would this affect my AC performance? When I turn the AC on and off from inside the cab I can hear the door moving under the dash.
Hate to carry the truck into the shop and spend $150.00 to have the shop tell me I need a new damper.
when a/c on max the white vac line should have vac to it and the damper lever in. if you have no vac you have broken line or a bad a/c switch. Another thing you can do to make inside colder is put valve on the heater core to block hot water from coming in the cab.
Thanks for your reply. I have looped the heater hose and covered the core inlet to prevent debris from entering the heater core. I will check the vacum to the damper lever. If I understand you what you are saying is if I have vaccum to the damper then the AC switch is working and I would need to replace the damper, correct?
Could I wire the damper lever in during the summer instead of replacing the damper or switch?
Thanks for your reply. When I pull the damper lever in away from the firewall while holding my hand over the AC vent the air volume decreases by 60%. Seems like mine is bass akwards.
when you do that is the max door opening or closing? I have found bags stuck in the max vent that can cause low air volume. the door to the max vent is on the passenger side kick panel ck that.
Pulled the kick pad and I found a plastic bag sucked up inside. Tied the dashpot open with a plastic tie. By doing this the arm in now away from the firewall. Can't tell if a door is opening or closing but it caused the volume of air to be reduced by 30% through the dash vents. The cab of the truck seems cooler. In the old days before automatic temp control when you turned on max cool the volume of air through the vents increased. Wonder why mine decreased? Isn’t max cool a recirculating function?
I did pull the vac. Line and I don’t have any vac. Going to the dashpot. Where do I start checking for the vac. leak? Looks like the white line runs back into the cab in a wire loom.
