Brakes.. Grrr...

I asked this in the Brakes forum but got no response.. Figured I'd ask my fellow 6L guru's..

I just threw those Powerstop Cryo Slots and Z36 on the front.. No matter what vehicle I own, I have an issue with Pad changes.. I end up with squealing.. Perhaps I'm just too retarded to understand the simple concepts of Pad changing!

I used CRC Disc Brake Quiet as DCSpecial recommended.. Got the back of the pads nice and tacky.. However I did notice there was no shim plates (believe thats the term?), the thin metal plates that are glued to the back of pads. My Ceramic's had them but not these Z36.. I bled the Pistons, put the pads in, hooked the tension springs (btw learned you really gotta hold the pads, they like to shoot out).. Threw the caliper on and built pressure up.. Now she stops when I want it to.. Slam on the brakes and she does a nose dive like a BMX'r wanting a face plant.. But if I'm beside a car or wall where sound reflects.. Under light braking I hear this squeal from the fronts.. Open driving you can't hear it.. But it's there and it's annoying..

Any ideas what to do? Like I said, no matter what vehicle I change pads on.. They always end up squealing afterwards..

Hey Storm, Did you break the pads in? Most manufacturers recommend a series of slow stops around 15 to 25 mph, then from 40 to 50 mph and then from highway speeds. Let them cool off in between cycles. Five to six stops per cycle. If they are already glazed, you could rough them up a bit with some sand paper and then break them in again. If you sand them, make sure no abrasive is left on the pad or you will chew up the rotor. Hope this helps.

I agree with 69, after a brake/pad change, you HAVE to break 'em in. Don't be shy with the hard stops either. Hit 'em just hard enough to keep them from skidding. If you have anti-locks, all the better. Hit 'em hard but DO NOT let the vehicle stop. Keep it rolling until you are slow, then do it again. I found that 3-4 times is plenty but more is better than less.

I hate to say this but I've always put those anti-chatter shim plates back in....and I've not had any squealing. Did you keep the old ones? If so, clean them up and try putting them on behind the pads.

Good Luck Pal!

Joe

You do NOT want to do initial hard stops. There is a break in period that really needs to be followed. Look here: http://www.ebcbrakes.com/Automotive.html for a really good break in procedure. IT WORKS.

Thanks Based on this it says that in the first 1000 miles pads will squeal as they are bedding in.. I'll follow the guide as best as I can for the 100 mile easy brake, then the next 100 miles do the stops it says.. Should help..

I put mine in at the Bobcat store on a Saturday in Austin and had plenty of empty roads to cruise around to bed them in. I was surprised at the difference it has ultimately made since I'd never done them that way before. I always put the pads on and hammered them. Live and learn.

In theory I should be ok right? They went in Saturday.. Had one quick brake check thanks to a motorcycle.. Few moderate stopping when I first put em in.. I imagine if I let it go 100 miles then start breaking them in like it says.. Should bed good eh?

Bedding starts on installation, and break-in can take from 300-1000 miles. I'm sure they engineer brake checks into the equation as no one can ultimately drive that far and not have some kind of "E" check. At least not in Austin, Tx.

Did the toll roads help with the morning rush hour traffic into downtown? I know it sucked when I left last July for sure.

No it didn't help... I still hit traffic on the toll road.. I spend bout $70 a month on tolls to and from the office.. Mopac is still dangerous.. I35 still jammed from FM1825 south.. Lowrise/Highrise is still a joke..

Also these are Metallic pads as well since they are Heavy Duty.. someone in the Brake Forum said they are known to be a bit noisy because of the metallic in them.. True?

That would be a question for Powerstop. I've got their front rotors on my chevy but EBC brake pads, so I have not a clue.
