They do make ministarters for the FE. You can get them from summit racing. They don't cost that much. It doesn't help the heat soak problem which is common on 390s with headers. It does make it easer to R&R.
What kind of headers do you have Karl? Do they tuck out through the wheelwell, or cut close to the block and down the centerline?
Rubber bands for starters, now there is an idea. I like the gear reduction starters, you can always tell when a Mopar is starting up because it makes that unique sound.
Ya gots to get the shiny boots on and step up into the "new age".
The mini starters now-a-days are nothing like ths Mopar "spin and release" ones, they're permanent magnet motor, anywhere from 4 to 7 to one reduction, and can turn over a big Block anything with 13:1 CR, no matter how hot the get.
Really is the best thing to do if you ever replace a starter.
I have Sanderson headers. I will try to get some photos tonight so you can see the setup. They come straight down in front of the starter. They then connect to the tail pipe and make a bend going toward the rear. At this point, they go under the starter.
Looks like we are assuming the problem is heat on the starter - are we sure of this?
And also, are we sure the joint where the tail pipe is connected to the header is tight? If not, it could be dumping hot exhaust onto the starter housing.

Good points Clint. I am going to work on timing and carb tonight with my neighbor. This might help if timing is causing the temps to go up. While under the truck, I will tighten the header bolts to the engine and exhaust pipe.
So, I put a wrap around heat shield on the starter and set the timing better. The starter seems to be working a lot better. Thanks for your help. I will get pics up soon.
I still don't know. I was too lazy to get out the old bottle jack and test it. I need to get a floor jack soon.
I drained the front differential, cleaned it out, replaced the gasket, added some redline 75w 90, and painted the cover. I ran out of time before doing the rear axle so maybe I will do the wheel spin test when I work on the rear axle.
Header wrap will cut the temp down but it will also hold the heat in the header and speed the decay of the exhaust, if you have stainless, expensive headers it won't be much of a problem but if you have bargain basement headers they will rust through much faster than if they were unwrapped.
