i had a rebuilt tranny" wolfe ace trans", installed on thursday, at local ford dealership, everything seems fine , truck shifts good, tows good . but when first start up in the morning or after sitting 10 hours while fishing , when I put it in drive it doesn't engage until after about 5 seconds it will then engage, and the problem doesn't happen again until it sits again after many hours. I checked the fluid level, ggod while hot. the level while cold is several inches up the dip stick. ? I'm going to talk to dealer tomorrow but i'd like to have an idea of what couldbe going on, from you guys. any input would be appreciated.
There is a valve in the trans that keeps the torque converter from draining into the pan when the engine is off. Your's isn't working, so the torque converter drains. It takes several seconds to refill it once the engine starts, then it can power the transmission and off you go.
Ford dealer found that no check valve was install with rebuild. A new check valve was installed. The transmission still takes time to engage, it seems to take a little less time but the engine still revs before the truck begins to move and move slowly. Can there be more to this then the check valve.
Let it idle for more than 5 seconds after starting it cold before putting into gear!
Then again, if they missed something when rebuilding it-------the internal seal in the forward piston gets hard as it gets old and needs to warm up a little before it will flex enough to seal the slight groove in the piston surface.
This shows up just like the problem you are having, but it will get much worse as time goes by as the seal gets harder and the groove gets deeper.
Then it will need to be reved and slams into first every time you shift into drive from either park, neutral, or reverse.
Thanks for the replies guys, and letting it idle for while before putting it in gear does work. I just wanted to be sure it is that simple and I won't be stranded somewhere. Again thanks
