About 8 months ago I traded my '99 EB Exp. in on a '03 EB Exp. in order to get 4X4. I lived in Phoenix and now live in the Albuquerque area and get snow now! I do like all the added creature comforts of the '03, but it doesn't seem to have the power of the older one. What's up with that?
Is the engine that much different? I have already installed a K&N and Bosch +4s. In the old one that made a huge difference in power, driveability and mileage. In the new one it hardly made a difference!
first of all, get rid of the bosch plugs. they dont do anything for fords. install motorcraft or autolite. as far as the engine goes...they are pretty much the same 2v from 97-04...just the body changed. alot of the differences are probably in the pcm calibration. the 03 up have a non-serviceable pcm(you cant chip them). a good tuner(xcal II) can help on that process. i too had the k&n fipk on my 03, and didnt notice much difference. also, check normal maintaince items like the fuel filter. i tell you what though...i didnt buy my 03 for gas mileage, so i can live with what i get.

I must beg to differ! On my '99 the Bosch plugs made a significant difference in driveability and power. I reallize I am driving a land barge so I'm not trying to get 30 MPG, but a little more bang for the fuel buck I'm already paying would be appreciated! On one of these dinosuaurs 1-2 MPG is a huge improvement! When trying to accelerate from a stop there seems to be very little in the way of power off the line. In fact compared to the '99 the newer Exp seems to be a lot less smooth in most driving situations. Will the tuner be able to correct these problems as I see them?
How much improvement would a cat-back exhaust make? I'd like to keep it quiet though, don't want to ruin the Wife's "School Librarian" image! LOL!
I haven't taken a lot of time to get to know the new vehicle, are the '03 Exps "drive by wire"? Kinda feels that way.
Dunno for sure, but I'm going to say no as the older one was tacking just over 2K at 70 MPH and the new one is just under. It shouldn't make that big a difference though. It almost feels like the engine is bogging when accelerating.
old one probably had 3.73's, and you probably have 3.55's now. i can tell for sure by your vin number if you care to share it(i work in parts for ford). a catback will help top end, not low end. the 03 is not throttle-by-wire. hope that helps a little.
i'm not sure if you have taken this into account but the altitude difference afaik, between phoenix (1100 feet ASL) and albuquerque (5100 feet ASL) is quite a bit. i live at about 6000 feet above sea level and lose about 25% of my power because of altitude. this has been tested (horsepower and torque) on dyno's and altitude will make a difference in performance. at higher elevations you will noticably lose hp, torque and gas mileage.
I don't think the VIN will decode to the axle ratio, unless 04markIII can look up the original build sheet from Ford with the VIN. However there should be an Axle code on your driver's door that you can decode to figure out your gearing. It should be something like H4 or 73.
