I am having a strange problem with my 78 f150 4x4. for some reason brake fluid is squezing past the cover on my master cylinder. The really strange thing is that I have replaced literally every part in the brake system. I've installed three different master cylinders, new brake booster, a proportioning valve, new rear wheel cylinders, new calipers, blew out the brake lines, tryed adjusting the pushrod to the m/c, nothing helps. The pedal is spongy feeling also, but i've bled the brakes at least six times and had it auto-bled at a shop as well. Any thoughts? I would sure appreciate any input. Thanks
Just a lousy cheap cover that came with the reman mstr cyl you bought. The boots probably dont get sucked down into the fluid either. Just buy a new one and install it. Make sure the surface of where it sits is level/square too. You could try a new tension spring, but, I doubt that is the problem. I just changed the cover.
I was having the same problem with my 77. I put at least three rebuilt master cylinders on it and the problem persisted. I got tired of it and bought a new, instead of rebuilt, master cylinder and never had a problem again.
If you are putting rebuilds on, you might consider a new unit. They are only about 30% more in cost and are well worth it.
