Starter/battery question.. odd.

About my 90' F150 302 5 spd.

For the past little while I've had to charge my truck off my moms car for a good 15-20 mins to get it to start. Each time I did so there would be something else I noticed that made me have to stop and shut it down (therefore not charging the battery much). First it was the screaming tensioner, at least that's what I thought it was at the time. Ended up being the seized air pump which I managed to un-seize. Then it was the whining power steering pump. I had forgotten that when we pushed it out of the driveway onto the street the cap popped and expelled the fluids.

So anyways, with the constant bitching by my Mom for using her car to charge it and her gas (which wouldn't be much but like she'd understand) I just finally said **** it and went and bought a nice new redtop optima. I was sorta planning on it anyways but this finally pushed me over the edge.

Now here's the question; in the winter I was having issues with the starter spinning and not engaging. I thought it was just the cold making it stick. And seeing as everytime recently when I started it prior to getting the new battery it would engage just fine, every time (on the cables). But now it's doing it again? Wtf mate? Anyone got any ideas? I can't seem to figure it out. *pulls out hair*

Hey things die . I have a starter will do same thing for days. Them nothing for weeks . I'd clean all connections ,same deal. So I got a extra rebuilt and waiting. If it lets me down Its out of there.

Your should have older starter on it try replacing the bendix (thing that engages starter)

By older style do you mean the non-two piece starter?

He was talking about replacing the starter drive (clutch) on this style starter.

Your shunt is probably dirty and needs a cleaning, this type of starter is old school, I got one in my Mustang too. Its a shunt type, the electrical current rips through the pull in winding pulling the shunt to engage the bendix with the flywheel. Its either worn out or needs some cleaning. Pull it apart find out, but get ready to buy a new one incase its torn.
