Now, i have about the same thing here.
IO want to replace my cam for a RV cam, and started disassembling everything at the front now.
When the balancer was off, the rubber between the rings almost falls out by itself, so it needs to be replaced, obviously.
Now, i have a "old spare" engine 351M in the barn, wich i disassembled to learn how things work, and it has a good balancer on it.
They seem to be the same.
Can i replace the one for the other?
Samething here, Can a 351m balancer replace a 400 one?, in my case im turnning my 351m into a 400, on brojectbronco.com they state that they are different and have dif keyways but can be used by alterning its original position,....
The 351M uses a different harmonic balancer than the 400 -- It is best to buy a new 400 harmonic balancer to go along with a 400 crankshaft. You can use a 351M balancer, however, you will have to rebalance the 400 crankshaft by adjusting the counter weights to bring the assembly into balance. Also, the timing marks on the 351M balancer will be nearly useless on a 400 crank -- I know because the engine shop used the 351M balancer on my engine. I had to set my timing at 20+ degrees to get the engine properly timed.
I'm gona buy a 400 harmonic balancer. My 351m one is crack all arround.I will try to have some pic of both when i received the "famous mystery" of that 400 harmonic balancer. The part #, from where i want to buy, have a different part #. 400#594-157 and the 351m# 594-083. I'm wondering why they don't share the same part # ? Same year 77 from 3/4 ton truck pick-up.
Sometimes its just an automatition f the store to organzie its inventary, but IS IT SO HARD TO USA A 351m hoarmonic balancer on a 400 ??? no real answer yet......

you can see both pictures not from me but from the manufacturer and those pics are not convice me at all the were different. Too small pics but you can enlarge them a bit. give me a few minutes.
I built a 400 for my nieghbors '78 F-350 Flat Bed 2 wheel drive auto. Found the balancer is bad and can't seem to find a new one anywhere. Napa, Pep-Boys, Kragen all say there is no such part. I have a friend at the local Ford Dealer looking but he didn't think he'd be able to find one. The bad one had Part # D7TE-BA on it. Anything you guys can tell me would be helpfull.
Thanks,
Steve

1977/79 351M/400's use THREEdifferent Harmonic Balancers. It all depends on the application.
Some 351M/400's use the same one, some do not.
1980/82: 351M's use a different harmonic balancer than a 400 uses.
D7TE-BA = D7TZ-6316-A ~ FTE sponsor GREEN SALES has three of these NOS.
ALL three of the 351M/400 balancers are no longer supplied by Ford = OBSOLETE

See my post #41 above ^^^ for the reason why there is more than one balancer.
