Melting point.

I am wondering why I should turn down my Bank's PDA for towing? Is EGTs the only reason? If so I can control that with my right foot.

the biggest reason is putting all that power through the tranny and everything else with all the weight out back is extremely hard on it all, you'll end up twisting and sheering driveshafts and more importantly cook the tranny

I would say that the problems are two-fold.

On the one side, you are already putting a good load on the drivetrain with the additional weight. Adding in the extra stress created by running a modified program just adds to the stress on the motor & transmission. EGTs are just a means of getting a glimpse at the conditions the motor is coping with; it does not take into account the cylinder pressure, oil & coolant temps, etc.

Secondly, Banks has not been known for good/efficient transmission management when it comes to the Torqshift & 6.0L. A performance program/tune generally assumes that there is very limited or no vehicle encumbrance. A tow program/tune will take into account the higher encumbrance and alter shift points & torque converter slippage to better manage the transmission's behavior. Given the choice, I would tend to lean towards the cautious side, as I definitely would not want to fork out the money for a transmission rebuild.

I offer this up with the disclaimer that I have no personal experience with Banks' products. It is just based on what I have learned from the various 6.0L communities over the past couple of years.

The problem with Banks, or for that matter any "Chip Module", is the fact that it does not do anything to the TCM.. In order to provide more power through the modification of the ECM, the TCM has to be programmed to handle the increase hp/tq.. We've had numerous cases of transmissions getting slammed on a daily basis due to the Chips inability to reprogram the transmission. The 5R100 will uphold to an extent, far superior than most realize.. Infact Matt had a customer last week that does a lot of Sled Pulling.. I for one can vouch that sled pulling is far worse then hauling your 16K Toy Trailer down the road.. The 5R100 was so shot, Matt spend most the night cleaning it up.. Clutch packs were shattered, metal was molded to one.. In the end the 5R100 can and will hold up to towing your weekend get away for miles down the road.. As long as both the ECM and TCM are properly programmed.. As current the only available method to that madness is the SCT XCal II programmer which gives us at Spartan Diesel complete control over your engine's performance, as well as the transmissions ability to handle the increased load.

If you have any concerns or questions, let us know
