Just wanted to use my first post to say hello to everyone. I've been lurking for quite a while and this site is GREAT! I'm sure I'll be bugging you guys with lots of questions in no time...my truck is acting kind of suspect right now so I'll appreciate all your feedback! Adios!
Picked up a '00 F-250 4x4 with 190,000 on the clock. pretty much bone stock except for straight piped exhaust. I guess i'll go ahead and start with my ?'s now...i was pulling my boat today (approx 6000 lbs) and had to absolutely bury it to get to 75 and really keep the pedal mashed to keep it at 65. low end torque is fine but i'm not really impressed on the highway. also, when it shifts into 3rd under moderate acceleration (E4OD) it shudders pretty bad. any idears??
Hey stroke-of-luck, first step here is a check of all the IC boots. Make sure you do not have a boost leak. Towing power will suffer miserably. As for the shudder on the 3rd gear shift, does it do it every time no matter what the throttle? Again, make sure no boost leaks and also check the up pipes for soot. Step by step stuff here. Welcome aboard the good ship 7.3.
Welcome to the site and to PSDs. You will never drive a POS gas truck again now that you have a real truck.
I second what Mike (Tenn) says about the IC boots. I recently went through and tightened all of mine and the gain in performance is unreal for something that took 30 minutes and was absolutely free.
If there are any other questions just ask. There are experts here on just about every subject relating to diesels. I'm not one of them though.....ha!
Welcome to FTE.
Shuddering when shifting could be a bad transmission, but I think it's more likely that you have a bad injector that is cutting out. Especially with the decidedly lackluster performance that you are describing. These trucks when you load them up are much more capable than what you are describing.
Hey stroke of luck... Welcome to FTE. A few tips, the blue bar running across the near-top of the screen, the far left button is User CP. Click on it, and on the left side is all of the user-changable settings. Fill in your signature that appears below posts, where you are from, what you do, etc. Alot easier if someone here lives close with you, possibly having a scanner or something.
Thanks for the reply's everyone. Ok, I'm pretty slow when it comes to diesel engines. I'm assuming that ya'll are talking about IC (intercooler) boots?? Do I just look for a hose clamp to tighten or what? What hoses should I look for soot in?
Kwikkordead...i just towed my boat again this morning and it is DEFINITELY a drivetrain problem. Sometimes the shudder is from 2nd to third or 3rd to 4th. If i am VERY easy on the throttle it doesn't really shudder too bad. I'm getting kind of nervous that I have a suspect tranny.
Your trans is a 4r100, the e4od is the old verision in the OBS trucks. There are a coupel difference IIRC between the two. The IC boots are intercooler boots, and you will see 4 of them, if you look at the top of the engine locate the turbo its in the back directly in the middle of the motor, come out of the turbo you will see a 5 way manifold, then you will see a boot with a long tube coming out of it, thats the intercooler tube. Connecting the 5 way manifold to the spider is a the boot and it has 2 clamps on it per boot. Make sure they are tight and they are not blown off, sometimes oil can make them slip off. The mod called CCV mod stops the oil from getting in the intake. Just follow the tube there is 2 on the passenger side and 2 on the drivers side, you will see where it goes into the intercooler. 8 clamps alltogether. Just dont overtighten them.
The shudder problem, could be injector or trans. Does it also do it unloaded?
