Would running boards protect your doors from door dings? I would imagine most parking lot car doors would not be able to hit your truck, if they can't get past the boards. Any suggestions? TIA
because of the curve to most doors, i would guess that even with running boards, doors could still hit yours just fine if they wanted to. they really wont stick out far to act as a barrier. this is why i always try to park away from everyone, and walk.
I think they help guard against door dings from "most" cars. Some running boards/steps/tubes stick out farther than others, and some vehicle doors are curved at the bottom more than others. Protection from other trucks and SUV's of the same height or higher is a different story. I would get the running boards and walk.
I have a Lariat SCrew and still have one or two dings even with the factory running boards. It seems that some people have no respect for other peoples cars. There are a lot of good paintless dent repair specialists that can remove 95% of the ding. It usual costs $50-90 per ding. I would call the BMW or Mercedes dealer for the best names and numbers.
I had a body shop install 3/4" stick on mouldings down both sides and a narrow half round moulding over the wheel wells. My truck is True Blue and silver so I had used black moulding. The side moulding is installed just above the indent. You can't really notice it unless you are looking for it. I have factory running boards and I'm thinking of having the narrow half round installed on the outside edge.
Short of an armed guard, running boards are about the best protection against Alpha Beta Rash. I've got the stock Ford units on my '03 King Ranch and so far no door dings. But, nothing is fool proof from parking lot morons.
