I am looking to trade in my 04 explorer and get another ranger. I am looking at a year range from 2000 - 2003 2WD and 4WD with above 60000 miles on them. The goal in this is to lower my payment from the Explorer and to use this for a DD. I drive 96 miles a day so I need something that is reliable. I am not looking for excellent gm but rather need to have a truck in the family. I will be putting at least 20000 to 25000 a year on the truck. I will need it to last at least 3-4 years at that pace. Is the Ranger's up to that task?
get a 99 reg cab, 5 speed 2.5l 2wd. Probably 18-25 mpg depending on habits. I just traded mine in a couple months ago @130K- dealer had it listed a little under 3,000 and with maybe grand or so in maintenance (proactive clutch and timing belt replacement) It will likely go another 130k w/out any problems. I can not say anything bad about the 2.5 or the manual trans for a DD.
Im getting 18mpg on my 04 S'crew with the 4.6, but with a family now I need the cab space. My complaint about the 3.o and 4.0 rangers is their mileage- by the time you add 4WD, bigger engine, and bigger body, you lose a lot of mileage- search this site and find out for yourself. If you're mainly looking for a good deal, don't limit yourself to just rangers- keep the f150 in mind. You will get more truck, little or no loss in mileage (depending on comparisons), and there are a lot out there to choose from, also.
