I can't find any specs. for a 5.4 ltr. V8 2001 Excursion. What is the towing capacity, and did it come standard with 3.73 gears? It has 38" tires. Any suggestions on what to do first for more pulling power without buying a new vehicle?
If this X has 38's then it must have some work done to it. If you have 38 and 373 your in for some issues. The truck will not go anywhere. At the minimum you should have 430 which with a 38 would bring the ratio to approx a little more then 410.
I bought it this way and don't know what gears are in it. It just towed a 30' Travel trailer and it would do about 30 - 35 mph on 7% grades with seven people in it and four dogs.. When trying to get started after a stop it would take a bit to get moving. It currently has no after market exhaust, air intake, or power chip. I am guessing it wasn't geared for the oversized tires. Is there any way to tell with out going to a mechanic, and doing it in the drive way?
I don't think it's going to matter what exhaust, intake or chip you put in that 5.4L. With those 38's, there's just not enough displacement for such a big beast. I moved up from an Expedition to an Excursion because the Expy just didn't have enough umph. You have an Expy engine in an X which weighs about 2000 lbs more, I think. Oui. If you're going to stay with that vehicle, just get used to the lower speeds on inclines.
Try to get in the 2200RPM range for 70mph ... or around 1950RPM for 60MPH. That will put the engine in its optimum power band and is similar to running stock tires with 4.30 gears. Save all the other dough you want to spend on intake, exhaust blah...blah...blah...
ya i agree... if you are running stock 3.73 gears, i say def. regear or if yuo dont mind, throw on some smaller tires...but still i would suggest a regear...i personally dont think the 5.4 and 3.73 gears is a good mate in such a large vehicle...and i have one of em...lol...a 2006 f250 5.4 3.73. i recently purchased 35" tires and i will be regearing to either 4.3 or 4.56's...good luck and keep us posted...here is a good place to get some gears...http://www.ringpinion.com/
