What is the easiest way to install these donuts into the up-pipes? Should I attempt to just take them loose at the flange and wedge up in there or take the turbo off. Just looking for ideas so I can try to get some mileage back. Thanks.
Best to do it when the transmission is out of the truck. The other option is to pull the turbocharger and go in from the top. However when i did that, i tightened the donuts down to the collector before i installed the turbo. The collector was misaligned a wee bit, and i had to pull the front of the turbo down to seat on the pedestal. Made one heck of an exhaust leak, so make sure you do it correctly. This last time i installed the bellowed pipes, tightened the upper joint, and then installed the turbo, and finally tightened the lower joints at the manifolds.
Kris, Do I need any seals or anything to put the turbo back on? So then best to leave it a little loose and line everything up and then tighten. Should I take the pipes loose at the manifold since those bolts are easier to get to?
I did mine with the tranny removed. I can have it out faster than pulling the turbo.
About a year ago...I did mine in an hour (swap trannies), on the side of highway 65, on the way home from BTS. Just should've had them do it while I was there. But my whole point was to do uppies when I swapped transmissions. Oh well, live and learn.
So then I guess it looks like pulling the trans. Do I need it all the way out or just outta the way. Trying to do this in the driveway so I have a floor jack and stuff. Maybe I will just do the bellowed pipes at the same time and be done with it. Do the bellowed pipes need them gaskets still or not? Now I just have to justify to the wife why I need these parts. I know pulling the trans will be easier than that.
I went in up top. be prepared to have an extra y-pipe handy if you need your truck for a daily driver. I let mine soak with PB Blaster and it still broke. When I called around to get it, I found that there was a recent price drop on it of about 90 bones, and the dealer told me that they break them often doing alot of the farm trucks around where I live.
Plus if you are doing the bellowed pipes, it's alot easier to go in from the top opposed to pulling the transmission. Once you have the new ones in, you fully tighten the bolts at the bellows, and then once the turbo is mounted and the collector is seated to the turbine inlet correctly, only then do you tighten the bolts at the manifolds.
Thanks fellas for the info. Now all I have to do is convice the wife to let me get them nice coated pipes from BWD. Maybe I will vacumn the house for her and cook dinner once or twice.
